Story

Sakiko, a travel agent in Tokyo, returns to Tokushima, her hometown, as soon as she receives a message that her mother Tatsuko, a bar proprietress, is hospitalized. Tatsuko looks like a star in the hospital with her natural sense of justice, for she demands the doctors and nurses treat their patients equally. She looks all right, but the doctor tells Sakiko that her mother is suffering from cancer and her days are numbered. Tatsuko has a secret. Back in Tokyo, she once fell in love with a doctor from Tokushima, but he was a married man. She gave him up and went to his hometown and had Sakiko. When Sakiko grew up, she was told by her mother that her father was dead. But in her memory, she has a vague outline of her father who took her to Mt. Bizan, the symbol of Tokushima, where she saw fireflies.
As she nurses her mother in the hospital, she becomes fond of a young doctor named Terasawa. He tells her that her mother signed an agreement to leave her body to science after she dies. Tatsuko leaves Sakiko a box of letters and money envelopes from her lover, which tell how deeply he loved Tatsuko but he could not betray his
devoted wife. As she learns that her father is alive in Tokyo, Sakiko visits the places where her parents had secret dates. Finally she goes to the address of the sender of the letters. Her father’s clinic is there, but hermeeting with him is only momentary. She leaves the clinic without calling him her father.
The famous Awa Odori festival plunges Tokushima into frantic enthusiasm. The streets are filled with colorfully-dressed dancers. Sakiko takes her dying mother out to see the festival for the last time. Tatsuko is happy. Then at the climax of the festival, a miracle happens…
