Story

A summer day breaks with the arrest of a novelist named Kikuji Murao for the charge of murder. He had killed a married woman with three children, Fuyuka Irie, after months of passionate love, responding to her request: “If you really love me, please kill me.”
Kikuji once attracted the attention of literary circles as a promising young writer, but his name has long been forgotten. An editor introduced him to Fuyuka, who called herself an admire of his works. They fell in love with each other at first sight. Stimulated by her earnestness, he promised her that he would write a new novel for her.
Kikuji went to Kyoto to see her for two hours which she could spare each time. Their encounter was brief but passionate. The violent love spurred him on with his new novel. As her husband got a transfer to Tokyo, she could meet Kikuji oftener. On her birthday, they went to a spa in the mountains. With a glass of wine in hand, she whispered: “I’m so happy I wish I could die this moment.” Then she asked her lover to strangle her. He put his fingers around her neck, but that was all. She grumbled later: “You’re timid. Why didn’t you kill me?”
Summer came. On the night of a fireworks display, Kikuji finally strangled her to death. A recorder and the manuscript of his new novel, which was praised by Fuyuka but not accepted by the publisher, are left at her bedside. Her voice from the recorder is heard: “I’m so happy I wish I could die this moment.”
After giving himself up, he explains about his motive for the murder: He killed her because he loved her so deeply and sincerely. However, it puzzles Miyuki Oribe, the prosecutor in charge, who starts an investigation into the murder by request…
