Apples are extremely delicate fruits, and it’s been said that they simply won’t bear fruit without the frequent dispensing of pesticides and fertilizers each year in addition to painstaking amounts of work. This film tells the story of one family that gave birth to sweet and delicious “miracle apples” without the use of pesticides. The protagonist, Akinori Kimura, is played by Sadawo Abe, who has displayed his remarkable talents in films like “Maiko Haaaan!!!” and on TV drama like “Marumo no okite” as well as on stage and in music. Akinori’s wife Mieko is played by Miho Kanno, whose superb acting abilities and massive popularity amongst women have firmly established her stature. And Akinori’s father-in-law is played by the legendary Tsutomu Yamazaki. The cast is rounded out by such talented actors as Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Mieko Harada, Takashi Sasano, and Masatoh Ibu. The director is Yoshihiro Nakamura, who has created such masterpieces as “The Glorious Team Batista” and “Golden Slumber”. The music is by world-renowned composer Joe Hisaishi (“Ponyo”, “Departures”). His love for his wife is what brings about a miracle. An inspiring true story is brought to the big screen.

1975, in the city of Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture. Apple farmer Akinori Kimura is concerned about his wife Mieko’s health. Due to the pesticides that are sprayed over ten times a year, her skin had developed rashes, and she had even been bedridden for a few days. His love for his wife compels him to decide on the path of organic apple farming using no pesticides. However, growing apples without pesticides have been considered so impossible as to be deemed “the prerogative of the gods.” Akinori must endure days of countless failures, opposition from the community, and a life of poverty that barely allows him to feed his wife and three daughters. Still refusing to give up, after eleven years of unimaginable hardships and desperation, Akinori discovers the truth that will overturn all previously held assumptions.
