In a man's journey to the hometown of his late wife and through meeting with strangers, there, he finds his wife's true wishes.

Eiji Kurashima is a technical instructor at a prison in northwestern Japan. One day, he receives two letters written by his late wife Yoko. On one, a single sparrow is depicted along with Yoko's request for her ashes to be returned to the seas of her hometown. The other notifies him that there is a letter left to be called for at a post office in Hirado, Nagasaki, Yoko's hometown. There are only 10 days left until the receiving deadline.
Yoko used to be a singer who visited the prison, and the couple's married life was peaceful and happy. They had been together for many years and he had thought that he and his wife understood one another. So why did she not tell him her wishes when she had been alive.
To find out his wife's real intention, Eiji decides to visit her hometown. He meets many people along the way. As he connects with those people and relates to their troubles and feelings regarding family and marriage, he recalls the memories of his mundane but heartwarming daily life with Yoko. Touching upon various lives and filled with various emotions, he arrives at his destination and scatters his wife's ashes. As he does so, he realizes what his wife was really trying to communicate to him.
