Story

Living together in one of the worst of Edo’s tenements is a very curious collection of people: prostitutes, actors, gamblers, thieves―the very dregs of Tokugawa society.
Among them is Sutekichi, a thief in love with the tenement landlady’s young sister. The landlady O-Sugi is herself attracted toward Sutekichi and offers her sister if Sutekichi will kill her husband.
He quite accidentally does so but this, rather than solving any problems, only creates many new ones.
The tenement-dwellers, having known a moment of hope when a mendicant priest comes to stay with them, soon revert to their hopeless and selfish ways. In the midst of a party, word comes that one of their number killed himself. Their only reaction is irritation that he has ruined their good time.
